Since 1987, Allette Systems has been designing and integrating publishing solutions for a diverse range of clients across different industries. Our clients include some of the largest commercial and government publishers in the Asia Pacific region, the USA and Europe. Focusing on open data and document standards, we continue to participate in their development and creating software to support these sites. At the same time, we see great potential in making high-end publishing capabilities available to the smallest teams and budgets – anywhere that improved collaboration or richer data can make a difference.
Fundamentally, our focus remains on delivering productivity and quality improvements for creators and consumers of documents. Whether your domain requires standards or legislation, maintenance manuals or engineering specifications, project or software documentation, regulatory or reference material, Allette Systems has decades of experience driving costs and complexity out of production workflows.
Decades of integration experience have given Allette Systems a front-row seat to the evolution of publishing technology. By 2000, having worked with the major publishing standards and technologies, we acquired a collaborative, web-based publishing product called PageSeeder and bet our future on two trends.
The first trend was clear, even if it wasn't as obvious as it is now. That is – single-user applications no longer met the requirements of users. Put simply, the lifecycle of a document – creation, review and maintenance – is no longer the responsibility of a single person. So while word processing tools are great for typing and drafting, there are many workflows where a review using uncontrolled file copies and single user software can be, paradoxically, more expensive than using paper printouts, sticky notes and pens.
If the first trend wasn't obvious, the second trend was simply following an idea that continues to be proven, that is – never bet against the web. So despite the promising attempts to improve on the collaborative capabilities of HTML and the web browser through plugins like Adobe Flash or entirely new protocols and software like Google Wave or Microsoft Sharepoint, web browsers and email continue to do the heavy lifting of collaboration.
Initially, the link-based architecture of PageSeeder was a magnet for organizations with exceptionally complex data and workflows. One group that was attracted were users of the eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) like the US Securities Exchange Commission, UK Ministry of Revenue and the Australian Tax Office. Another was large industrial companies with a lot of PDF documents to review such as ConocoPhilips Petroleum, Cisco, ISO and others. Over the years, PageSeeder evolved to support hundreds, then thousands of private groups reviewing document collections that range from unique, to partially overlapping, to identical. At the same time, support for different types of documents grew to include massive collections of legislation, pharmaceutical regulatory material, educational publications including text books, assessments, assignments and reports.
Concurrent with these evolving capabilities has been our focus on making it possible for the smallest team to access the power of PageSeeder. With our latest update and refresh of support material and resources, it is possible for anyone to access and deploy PageSeeder-based solutions. Please keep in mind that the objective for PageSeeder is to help software professionals build quality solutions for their users in the least amount of time. Like any document processing system, from a blogging engine to advanced word processing, PageSeeder requires skills ranging from system administration to document modelling.
